CHARACTER

Name: Karoliina O Nidhold
Canon/OC: Original
Journal: kalt
Race: human
Nationality: Avvar
Occupation: Hunter/trapper/trader
Division: Scouting
Mage or Not: N
Age: 29

History

Nidhold
- Hold beast is a large snake.
- The 'cursed' hold, rumors abound about how nasty the residents are. They aren't even particularly liked by other Avvar, although those who do trade with Nidhold know the majority of the rumors are hyperbolic.
- But the Nidhold tribe revel in these rumors, and probably spreads some themselves.
- And are definitely jerks.
- Big fans of the Lady of the Skies, and all about momento mori.

Youth
- Youngest daughter of Thane Hieroni O Nidhold. Two older brothers, only the eldest also has Carla's ambitions to inherit their father's role.
- Early on starts a hateful rivalry with her eldest brother. She challenges Donndubhán at every turn.
- He still makes master of the hunt before her; infuriating.
- Lives a life of hunting, trading furs, banditry. The mountain life.

The Necromancer - CW: Kidnapping & extremely dubious consent
- One fine day, Carla finds a woman necromancer dying alone in the crumbling remains of an ancient hold.
- Takes her home and keeps her prisoner.
- Wants to know all of her secrets, especially why she was dying alone in the mountains.
- It's like sometimes people run you out of town for practicing necromancy on their loved ones.
- Carla is very excited by the tales of necromantic power.
- Courts the necromancer with gifts.
- Gay stuff.
- The necromancer tries to manipulate Carla's infatuation and hunger for knowledge to gain her freedom from the rooms she's been kept in.
- Carla will only give her some freedom if they're bound together in front of her tribe. So that the entire tribe will descend on the necromancer if she turns out to be heckin' treacherous.
- Their 'wedding' is mostly a big theatrical threat.

The Research
- The crumbling hold where the necromancer was found is given a little refurbishment for living space and research facilities.
- It is still cold and decrepit. The necromancer complains. Carla shrugs.
- Bodies are brought for the necromancer's research: thugs who had challenged the wrong strangers, traders who had failed in their swindle, and anyone with the misfortune to wander their way into the Nidhold controlled paths of Frostback.
- It is a nightmare of bones, blood, and bodies.
- The disappearances are noticed in the lowlands. Tales spin. Vampires. Werewolves. Witches. Necromancers!!
- Other occultists come to check it out. After tea and chatting, they are poisoned, murdered, looted, and bones used for research.

I Hate You
- The necromancer tries to poison her captor.
- Wow too bad Carla literally collects and immunizes to poisons as a hobby.
- The necromancer tries to hex her captor.
- Carla has prepped some protection runes.

Personality

Avvar. Carla is very sure of herself and who she is in the world. She is also used to being the Thane's daughter. There's nowhere she thinks she doesn't belong, there's no one who has the right to speak over her. She's quick and eager to take recompense for sleights. She's as likely to start a public fight as she is to poison you slowly; enjoying both brute violence and quiet, pointed assassination.

Despite using her tribe's honor as an excuse to pick fights, Carla isn't driven to maintain status quo or tradition. Norms that don't interest or please her, she takes great pleasure in breaking apart and perverting. For example, she kidnapped a very unethical necromancer to marry publicly.

Obsessive. Carla's behavior towards the necromancer is her behavior towards the things which strike her fancy. They're all generally dangerous things that others would shy from extending their fingertips towards. Carla is a thrill-seeker, a collector, and undoubtedly an abuser. She uses her power within the clan, and within herself, to get and keep the things she wants. She has boundless razor-sharp attention for that which intrigues and challenges her.

Cold. Her callousness isn't really remarked upon in her society. Her father is a cold, machiavellian man swift to make judgment and order deaths. Her brother is brooding and suspicious-- (I mean. Carla has only tried to assassinate or poison him a couple times. WHY SO SUSPICIOUS, BROTHER???) --and he has his own devoted followers hoping for his succession.

The tribe live hard lives in the mountains and take noticeable pride in their grit and the fear outsiders have of them. They enjoy feeding the tales of werewolves and monsters in the mountains. Having a kind of terrifying or eccentric leader works for them. Some really like Carla for succession.

Meticulous. The respect she receives from those tribe members moved to her ways, over her brother's, isn't unwarranted. She's intelligent, decisive, ambitious. When she makes promises she keeps them. Works done by her hand are works done by a perfectionist. She keeps the sharpest honed blades, sells the finest leathers, hunts the largest game, and never seems to flag in stamina or determination. She never calls off the hunt.

Chaotic Neutral. She doesn't believe in Good or Evil, so you won't see any judgment or zealotry from her. She is a proponent of personal choice and inner strength. She also thinks might makes right and that if you can't stand up for yourself you deserve what you get.

Unempathetic. Interpersonal problems don't interest her and she finds most people to be throwaway. Most people are resources to be used and managed in various capacities. She dehumanizes those who don't interest her down to their functions and parts. Has zero conceptual problems with slavery or the trade thereof.

Opinions & Affiliations

Avvar Tradition: Carla sees the truest heart of Avvar tradition to be resistance. Her people have uniquely resisted the call of Tevinter and the Andrastian faith, whether or not she cares for every single of her people's beliefs, she thinks her people have at least chosen their own way rather than being overwhelmed and shaped by the whims of power. Avvar have their own power.

Other Avvar: Might leave them alone out of idle appreciation for her own kind, might try insulting their honor just to get a fight, but that's just how she is.

Dwarves: Mostly sees them as a resource for trade. Not really worth fighting with, nor having 'friendships' with. Inferior to Avvar, but useful.

Elves: Also inferior, but possibly useful. Has absolutely no objections to elven slavery, mostly because she doesn't object to slavery in general. You get what you get.

Institutions (The Chantry, The Mage Circles, The Qun, The Inquisition): Institutions of control that she is not interested in being controlled by. Thinks poorly of those who are very interested in being controlled.

Magic Users: Carla personally finds their power exciting and delicious and mostly wants to keep them as beautiful trinkets/weapons. Is interested in ways to make herself dangerous to them and researching more ways to protect herself from their magic in order to impose control over them.

Wardens: Could not be less interested.

General Lowlanders: Not good enough, at anything. Buy my furs.

Rifters: Interested in what they know and what they're good for. Wouldn't mind seeing one dissected!

Strengths & Weaknesses

Positive
+ Sharply observant and learns quickly.
+ Relentlessly curious to know the intricate workings of everything.
+ A perfectionist who never half-does anything (that matters).
+ Nothing frightens her, and her will is pretty unbreaking.
+ Genuinely believes in people's right to fight for themselves. Agency and personal choice. (Can be manipulated and swayed when points are posed appropriately.)

Negative
- Genuinely believes that when people fail in the fight for themselves, they get what they get. Might makes right. (Can be manipulated and swayed when points are posed appropriately.)
- Manipulative, controlling, and often purposefully emotionally abusive just for the fun of it.
- Cruel, selfish, and unempathetic to how her behavior personally effects others.
- Disloyal to everything except her own personal obsessions.
- A thrill seeking asshole, who will sow chaos just because.
- Can be both obsessive AND fickle depending on whether or not something has started to bore her.

Practical Skills
- Hunter/trapper & trader.
- Tanning & taxidermy.
- Poison collector/enthusiast/aficionado - poisonous creatures and plants, and their extracts.
- Mountainous survival skills.
- Ranger/Rogue type, agile with both ranged and close-range weapon options. Good with traps and poisons (as mentioned above).
- Casual conspirator in tribal political environment.

Inventory

- Hunting gear, both clothes and weapons.
- Short sword, daggers, bow & arrows.
- Some of which are poisoned.
- Outfitted with some runes for magic resistance so that her wife won't be able to kill her too easily.

Motivation

Just another Avvar interested in the rifts and how the war is really going so that decisions can be made about what Nidhold will do if it encroaches on them. More interested in Riftwatch now that it has broken off and begun its own recruitment, since she's not that in to the Inquisition either.
